Satellite picture Australia

From the Satellite pictures of Australia, the Australian Bureau collects the data and uses them to facilitate national weather services of Australia. The Bureau monitors every day weather conditions, and the influence of weather, on changing global climates. Numerous satellites are busy taking pictures of various images of atmospheric Australia
These images include:

  • Infrared (IR) images
  • Visible images
  • Water Vapor channel
  • Image Updates
  • Time Stamps
  • Browsing the Archive

Infrared (IR) images – IR images are taken from the discharged radiation by earth and its environment at thermal-infrared wavelengths. These images provide information on the temperature of the underlying surface or cloud. These informations may be required at any point of time of the entire day and nights, so the IR satellite images are available for 24 hours.

IR imagery is available on:

NOAA 17 and NOAA-18: Channel 4: 10.3-11.3 µm Channel 5: 11.5-12.5 µm MTSAT-1R: Channel 4: 10.3-11.3µm Channel 5: 11.5-12.5 µm FY-2C: IR1: 10.5-12.5 µm

Visible Images

Visible images are radiated from the earth and clouds. These images provides clear picture of clouds. VIS images help the meteorologists to have extra information that may not appear on Infrared temperature images. Like fogs appear clear in visible images but Infrared images, it may not appear, when the fog and the land share the same temperature. Visible images are accessible exclusively at day time, as in night the earth appears to be black.

Visible imagery is available on:

NOAA 17 and NOAA-18: Channel 1: 0.58-0.68 µm Channel 2: 0.725-1.10 µm
MTSAT-1R: Channel 1: 0.55-0.90µm
FY-2C: VIS 0.5-1.05 µm

Water Vapor Chanel

The water vapor imageries are derived from the emitted radiations by water vapors. Instead of not being an atmospheric window, it is the part of the spectrum where the water vapor is domineering absorbing gas.

The water vapor channel is available on

MTSAT-1R and FY-2C
Image Updates

When the satellite starts taking the picture Of Australia, right from that moment, within the next 30 minutes the image updates are available on the web.

Time Stamp up

Satellite images are time stamped in "UTC" (Coordinated Universal Time), which is equivalent to GMT or Z time (Greenwich Mean Time). This is the start time of the reception of the top of the image from the satellite.

Browsing the Archive

This is a browse service that offers free access to browse images for Visible (1:32 resolution) or Infrared (1:8 resolution) channels to assist with the selection of required dates and times for ordering higher resolution images or radiances from the Bureau's Satellite Data Archive.

Satellite pictures of Australia keep us updated with the various atmospheric changes of Australia.
