Natural History of Australia

Australia history Sydney

The natural history of Australia is varied and dates back to centuries. Present day Australia is the result of geological evolution of the Gondwana plateau. Flora and Fauna in Australia is the result of Geological evolution and the wide climatic changes in the area over a large time period.

Historically Australia is 2.5 billion years old. The oldest rocks known to mankind, the Archaean rocks is the baserock of the major part of Australia. Archaean rocks are basically categorised into igneous and metamorphic rocks. Yilgram, in the west part of the Western Australia, Pilbara cratons in the north part of Western Australia and Eyre Peninsula in South Australia were the stoerhouses for this oldest mineral found on earth.

The supercontinent Rodinia was the result of Tectonic collisions, later after Rodinia broke up,it resulted into the formation of the three major continents of todays world, namely, Australia, India and Antartica.

Environment of Australia favoured plant growth which could survive in coastal environment. During the Devonian, Australia saw the first shrub-sized to tree-sized lycopods, and until the early-carboniferous period, this plant growth dominated the flora and fauna growth in Australia. In the later-carboniferous period Australia shifted more towards the polar latitudes from the equatorial latitudes, and the change in climactic condition due to the drift favoured the growth of seed-ferns, and consequently the growth of lycopodes gave way.

After Australia got separated from the Gondwana plateau, the climate was warm and humid and favoured rain forest vegetation.inner parts of Australia supported abundant wildlife and many water bodies like rivers and lakes were a common view. Reverse Climactic condition during the Pleistocene period led to a more often glaciation which resulted in lower sea levels.

Australia saw first human habitation in the late pleistocene period, and during this time the mega fauna became extinct which started developing during the Miocene and Pleistocene period. Inflow of Aborigines resulted into a reduction of plant life and animal life due to some acquired food habits.

The Natural Histroy of Australia can be known better through extensive researches an this reveals a whiole lot of interesting facts.
