Aboriginal Australia History Nomads Triumph

Aboriginal Australia history tells about the native people of Australia and the triumph of the nomads of Australia. Australian Aborigines are Australia's indigenous people. Recent survey by the government counted about 400,000 aboriginal people in Australia which equals to about 2% of Australia's total population.

Australian Aborigines migrated to Australia some 30,000 years ago from someplace in Asia. These people comprise of 500–600 distinct groups. Strong spiritual beliefs tie these Aboriginal people of Australia to one another and to their land.

Aboriginal spirituality depicts the close relationship between humans and the land. Aborigines call the beginning of the world as the Dreaming or Dreamtime. According to the mythology aboriginal ancestors came from below the earth to form various parts of nature including animal species, bodies of water, and the sky during the beginning of the world.

The word aborigine is derived from Latin, meaning original inhabitants. Like other religions aboriginal belief does not separate the human species from the nature. Aborigines believe that some of their Ancestors are spiritually alive in some parts of the nature like in rock or rivers.

The oral tradition of Australian aborigines includes storytelling which tells about their vivacious life and culture. Their songs reflect the Dreamtime and tell other tales of the land. The traditional dances and diagrams drawn in the sand cite examples from the oral tales.

Some books on Aborigines and Australia

  • The Chant of Jimmie Blacksmith- Thomas Keneally
  • The Songlines- Bruce Chatwin
  • In a Sunburned Country- Bill Bryson

The beauty of aboriginal art lies in the sculpture, bark and rock paintings, rock carvings, baskets and beadwork. Many of them earn a living by selling these articles.

As a result of colonization and forced assimilation in the late 1880s most aborigines had to join white rural and urban communities. Consequently their economic condition deteriorated and they were affected by new diseases. This resulted in massive depopulation and extinction of some aboriginal tribes.

But these aboriginal people are regarded as the original inhabitants of Australia and they are witness of a long history which ultimately shows their triumph over all odds.
