Murray River South Australia

Murray River south Australia is the 2nd longest river. The source of the Murray River lies in the Alphs of Australia. It has a meandering flow. The river has created a natural border between Victoria and New South Wales. The saline water of Murray River flows across many lakes such as Coorong, Lake of Alexandrina and others. The Murray River meets the Indian Ocean through Murray mouth located near Goolwa. River Murray occupies the one- seventh portion of Australia's land. In the time of drought, sometimes it becomes completely dry. Historical records say the Murray River of South Australia was the discovery of Hume and Hovell.

  • Variety of fishes can be found in the river. Those include
  • Murray cod
  • Trout cod
  • Golden perch
  • Macquarie perch
  • Silver perch

The other distinct species of aquatic life include

But unfortunately the water of the river is becoming polluted day by day post European settlements. Some of the dangerous new species of fishes like carp, gambusia, weather loach, redfin perch, brown trout and rainbow trout are also proving harmful for the existing fishes and river plants.

The Murray River of South Australia has great cultural importance. In 19th century the steamboats could be seen in the river being used for conducting trade. However in recent times they have been replaced by recreational boats, house boats, private small boats and paddle steamers floating on the river. Private boats sometimes are found engaged in fishing along with water skiing. Apart from providing pleasure the water of Murray also helps the plants to sustain but nowadays the transport facility of the river is not getting much importance due to the modernized land transport facility. This river consists of two regions- River land and the Murray land. The major towns supported by Murray River includes

  • Goolwa
  • Murray Bridge

  • Renmak
  • Swan Hill

The Murray River of South Australia indeed one of the most important rivers of Australia.
