Australian Federal Government

The Australian Federal Government had two tiers - the Commonwealth Government and the State Governments. The Australian commonwealth is a federal constitutional monarchy. In Australia we find parliamentary democracy. The Australian Government is characterized by federalism and distribution of powers.

The Australian Federal Government mainly executes the judiciary, executive and legislative powers. The distinct feature of Australian constitution is its federal legislature. The Parliament of Australia consists of two houses, the House of Representatives and the Senate. The Queen remains at the head.

The Australian Federal Government has several sovereign parliaments in the various states. There are 6 state parliaments, 2 territory parliaments and a federal parliament which is situated in Canberra. Each of them are given a specific duty. The lower house of each parliament is responsible for the formation of government. The Australian Federal Government is led by the state governments. It has Territory Governments, Premiers and Chief Ministers.

In case of any conflict cropping up between the States and the Commonwealth, the Australian High Court has the power to sort it out. On the other hand the Parliament of the Commonwealth can bring changes to the constitution along with the support of double majority vote. As stated earlier, Australia consists of several territories. Among them three territories are self-governed. These territories include

  • The Australian Capital Territory
  • The Northern Territory
  • Norfolk Island

There are some territories that are controlled by federal law. Such as

  • Jervis Bay
  • Christmas Island
  • Cocos (Keeling) Islands

The third tier of Australian government is the local government. Local government of Australia looks after the local issues. Such as roads, libraries, garbage cleaning etc.

Like all countries, the Australian Federal Government also sees the presence of an opposition party. The main role of it is to criticize the policies of government. There are several parties that exist in Australia namely Liberal party, National party, Labor party etc

Federal government is indeed the distinct feature of Australia.
