Abovyan

Abovyan was formed in 1963 and is a new industrial city of Armenia. This city is named as Abovyan after the founder of modern Armenian literature and the mounter of Mt. Ararat, Khachatur Abovian. Initially, there was an ancient village called Elar at the site of this city. Later Abovyan city was created in the same location.

Location of Abovyan:

Abovyan is located in the Kotayk Marz province of Armenia. It lies 10 km northeast of the capital city Yerevan.

Exploring Abovyan city:

• High rise buildings and well laid out wide roads are characteristic of Abovyan.

• An important tourist attraction in Abovyan is the ancient village of Elar that stands on a hill near the city. This village formed a prime location during the Urartian conquest. The presence of charter tombs and other archaeological evidences reflect the fact that Elar was inhabited during 4 th millennium BC. The Chapel of S. Stepanos, which is a new age cemetery has obscured the site almost completely.
• FC Kotayk Abovyan is one of the oldest football clubs of Armenia based in Abovyan . It has also participated in the Armenian Premier League.

By the virtue of a well developed network of motorway and railway that connects Yerevan to the north eastern areas, Abovyan is often regarded as the satellite city of Yerevan. This has resulted in Abovyan being sometimes referred to as the “ North Gate of Yerevan”.
