Catamarca


Catamarca is one of the famous and populous provincial areas of Argentina, situated in the north eastern zone of the country. The wide region of Catamarca holds a population of 334,568 aborigines. Almost 95% of total Catamarca populace is literate which signifies the growth of Argentina, in terms of education and the over all progress of the country.

Geography : Catamarca is bordered by Chile to its west and is surrounded by la Rioja, Cordoba, Tucuman, Santiago del Estero and Salta province of Argentina to its north.

History: Catamarca is enriched with the history of periods-old blood-sheds and struggles for identity. The province has been attacked several times by indigenous people. Under various ruling the state has been named and re-named quite a few times. In 1776 Catamarca owned the title of ‘Subintendencia' under the Salta intendancy. In 1821 the province claimed its self-government, and the first elected governor of Catamarca province was Nicolas Avellaneda y Tula.
