While vacationing on the beaches of Antigua, there are a host of activities which can be done at Antigua. Some of these activities are based on land while some others are sea based. There are opportunities for exciting excursions also on the island. Some of the land activities in Antigua include tennis, cricket, golfing, hunting, riding, biking and hiking and bird watching. Some of the water activities in Antigua include kayaking, fishing, diving and snorkeling, boating, windsurfing, deep sea fishing, Miramar sailing and yachting. The excursions on the island comprises of Caribbean helicopters, Antigua safaris, tropical adventures, day cruises and sailing cruises.
Antigua’s annual Tennis Week draws international competitors to the island in the month of May every year. Antiguans are completely devoted to the game of cricket and the island has produced many successful players of the West Indies team. Cricket lovers can visit the Antigua and Barbuda Museum to have a glimpse of the famous bat of Vivian Richards. There are three golf courses in Antigua— one in Half Moon Bay, at the Cedar Valley Golf Club and another at Jolly Harbor. Riding is also a major fun in Antigua as the place has several stables and arrangements for riding can easily be made.
Sailing is one of the major activities in Antigua and has become a major part of the Antiguan culture. The Nelson Dockyard today hosts international racing boats, recreational yachts and classic sailboats, more so during the annual Sailing Week of Antigua. Antigua is also famous for its diving and snorkeling facilities and it has hundreds of wrecks to explore. Dickenson Bay is a great spot for all kinds of windsurfing activities. The annual windsurfing activities are held annually in January and July. Hunting and sport fishing is an exciting activity in Antigua. The Antigua and Barbuda Annual Sport Fishing Tournament is held in May each year.
Antigua has many trials and tracks which are suitable for hiking. Much of the natural appeal of Antigua revolves around the multitude of bird species found on the island. The Frigate Bird Sanctuary on Barbuda is the largest bird sanctuary in the Caribbean and comprises of over 170 species. The Long Island and Great Bird Island also are popular destinations for birdwatchers.
