The flag of Antigua and Barbuda was officially adopted on February 27, 1967 and was designed by the teacher of a school named Reginald Samuels when Antigua gained “statehood” status. The Antiguan flag has been used for maritime purposes since 1981 when Antigua and Barbuda islands gained complete independence.
Mr. Samuel is an Antiguan artist, sculptor, art teacher and painter and he made this design at a competition. That original board may now been seen displayed at the Museum of Antigua and Barbuda. The present flag of Antigua is designed on a red base comprising of an inverted isosceles triangle on the top edge with three horizontal bands of different colors. The bottom third part of the pyramid is white, the middle is blue and the top portion is black in color. In the bottom part of the black area there is a symbol of half of a 16-pointed star or sun.
The seven rays of the sun in the Antiguan flag symbolize the dawning of a new era. The red color stands for the blood of their forefathers and the dynamic spirit of the people. The black color symbolizes soil, African heritage and gold and the blue and white colors stand for sea and sand of Antiguan Island, the chief tourist attractions. The symbol “V” formed by the red border symbolizes “Victory at last”. The seven points of the sun perhaps represent the six parishes and the sister island of Barbuda. The amalgamation of the yellow, blue and white colors symbolizes the sun, sea and sand respectively.
