The Antarctica Peninsula is the most frequented part of the continent of Antarctica. Having the best scenic beauty and wide array of wildlife, the region has developed into the most sought after places in the ice continent. Located in the northernmost part of Antarctica, the Antarctica Peninsula is outside the Antarctic Circle. The region extends from 63ºsouth to 75ºsouth and from 57ºwest to 65ºwest. Though Antarctica is a country covered with ice all throughout the year, this particular region has a milder climate in comparison to the other places on the continent.
The surface terrain of Antarctica Peninsula is extremely rugged and mountainous. There are lofty mountain peaks visible in the region and are considered to be a continuation of the Andes Mountains of South America. The mountain peaks fall in a range of 2,500-3,000 meters. Several ice caps, ranging to a height of above 2,000 meters, are seen in the peninsular region of Antarctica in the extreme winter season. The Larsen Ice shelf on the eastern fringe of Antarctica Peninsula has numerous glaciers flowing into it.
Antarctica Peninsula has wide variety of wildlife including several species of birds. Some of the noteworthy fauna in the region consist of penguins, elephant seals and leopard seals. Flora in the region consists of vascular plants, mosses, lichens and some forms of green algae. The Peninsula of Antarctica also has numerous research stations, ports, harbors and water channels for its favorable climatic conditions in the region.
