Antarctica Explorers

Antarctica being the coldest continent of the world has remained unexplored for a long time. Antarctica explorers are those who have risked their lives to set a mark on this continent. The explorers to Antarctica were adventurous, determined and eager to explore the unexplored land. The four more prominent Antarctica explorers were Richard E Byrd, Sir Ernest Shackleton, Robert Falton Scott and Roald Amundsen.

Richard E Byrd was an American explorer who went to Antarctica in flight. He was in fact the first person to go there by flight. After getting successful in his mission, he started working as a naval officer of the US. There is a part of Antarctica named after his wife Marie Byrd.

The most noted among these four Antarctica explorers was Sir Ernest Shackleton. He actually made three trips to Antarctica. The first was with Robert Scott in 1901-02. The second was in 1907-09. His third visit was in 1914 in a ship called Endurance. He was an English explorer who was in the year 1874 and died on 25th January 1922 on South Georgia Island. In his last journey the ship got stuck in the year 1915 and ultimately he had to reach in a row boat.

In the year 1911 Robert Falton Scott made his journey to the Antarctica. He took winter equipments made of wool, which failed to protect him and his team members from the biting cold. So, on their return journey they had to face death. In December 1911 Roald Amundsen made a trip to the South Pole in Antarctica. He was the first person among his contemporaries to have made a successful come back.

Even today, many scientific expeditions are made to Antarctica for exploring the continent. There are many explorers around the world, who still strive for a chance of reaching the South Pole
