City & Country Codes: In order to make a call to Holland, the international dialing code (00) followed by 31, the country code and the area code has to be added to the destination number. The important area codes and the respective areas are Amsterdam 20, Arnhem 85, Breda 76, Delft 15, Dordrecht 78, Eindhoven 40, Enschede 53, Gouda 1820, Groningen 50, Haarlem 23, Heemstede 23, Heerlen 45, Hillegersberg 10, Hilversum 35, Hoensbroek 45, Hoogkerk 50, Hoogvliet 10, Leeuwarden 58, Leiden 71, Loosduinen 70, Maastricht 43, Nijmegen 80, Oud Zuilen 30, Rotterdam 10, The Hague 70, Tilburg 13, Utrecht 30.

Telephone Assistance: While staying at Amsterdam, it is necessary to know the important emergency numbers. The police, fire brigade and ambulance number is 112. National police number is 0900 8844 and the road patrol number is 0800 0888. The telephone numbers within Holland is 0900 8008 and from abroad is 0900 8418.

Public Phones: Telephone booths with orange and gray color can be seen inside and around the Netherlands Railway Stations. Calls can be made from these booths using coins. Most of the public booths also accept credit cards and special telephone cards. The phone cards are available at post offices and tobacco shops. Green booths locate outside railway station need a different telephone card from that used in other booths. The KPN-Telecom public phone boxes charge € 0.30 per minute for national calls. But, if the calls are made from a public phone a minimum of € 0.20 is charged. Calls made after 8pm are cheaper in the city.

Postal Service: The Central Post Office in Amsterdam located near the Dam Square is the main post office that serves the city. Post offices are open from 9am to 6pm from Monday to Friday and 10am to 1pm on Saturday. It can also be relied to send small parcels safely. Letters weighing up to 20g within Europe cost € 0.50. Post cards cost € 0.59 anywhere outside the country. The blue sticker for the overseas letters can be obtained here in addition to stamps. The letters can be dropped in the red and orange colored post boxes placed at various public places in the city. People reach here not only to send letters and parcels but also to buy certain things like telephone discount card and useful stationary. The Post bank, a division of the post office helps in foreign currency exchange. People can also withdraw money from the ATM centers located in the post office.

Internet Cafes: Amsterdam has a number of Internet cafes that are also considered as an entertainment center. The first Internet café in Amsterdam was with old Macs and PCs where people used to enjoy mailing and chatting. But, now the Internet cafes in the city have come out with new system and big flat screen. This has now become the favorite place of youngsters after pubs, clubs and cafes. The main Internet cafes in the city are:

Easy Everything- They have three stores of which two are located at Damrak (Damrak 33 1012 LK Amsterdam) and one at Leidsestraat (Free Record Shop, Leidsestraat 24 1017 PB Amsterdam). They provide lesser rate than their competitors.

The MAD Processor (The MAD Processor, Kinkerstraat 11-13 1053 DB Amsterdam. Ph: 612 18 18)- People usually reach here to play their favorite games and meet their fellow gamers. With nominal rates, it also provides many other facilities like fax, color printer, laser printer etc.

Kinko's- Located in Leidseplein, it also has a copy shop. This can be seen crowded in the evenings and holidays.

Internet Café (Maartelaarsgract 11, 1012 TN Amsterdam)- Located 100m away from Central Station, it has become a meeting place for tourists and locals. It offers a friendly atmosphere where people can relax and check their mails or chat with friends.
