Bicycle
Bicycles are the most comfortable and convenient means to get around the city. With its narrow roads and canals, people found bicycle as the best form of transport, making Amsterdam a bicycle friendly city. Be it grandmothers, mothers, children, police or mayors, majority of the Amsterdammers choose bicycles to travel within the city. Although this 19th century mode of transport became less important after the arrival of cars and luxurious vehicles, its trend got back to the city with much vengeance. The extensive usage of bicycles in the city has increased the number of users to 600,000.
Bike Rental: There are a number of bicycle rental companies in the city. They provide kid's bike, delivery bikes, racing bikes, mountain bikes and tandems.
Boat
The various boats available in the city operate services to most of the major attractive centers of the city. In order for the people to enjoy a boat ride or to shop, museum boats are available in the city. With a day ticket, people can enjoy the largest hands-on science museum, zoo and other major museums and centers of the city. The Supperclub boat run by the Amsterdam club offers cruises and candlelight for its travelers.
Ferries: For a city like Amsterdam, which is surrounded by canals, water transport is a must for the easy transportation of the people from one place to another. Every six to ten minutes, there are two free ferries that leave from the piers behind Central Station to Amsterdam north. This is an exciting and cheapest way to enjoy the beauty of the city from the waters.
Canal Boat: Those who like to explore Amsterdam can board a canal boat that travel to all important places in the city. With many canals and waterfronts, the city can easily be covered by various water transport like canal boats, canal bikes than by road.
Canal Bus: The canal bus offers services to various routes like green line, red line and blue line. This is comfortable and convenient for the people to travel to museum and other attractive places of the city. On board the bus an interesting commentary about the city is provided. People can avail this opportunity by simply taking a day pass that is valid till 12.00 pm.
Canal Bike: Canal Bike is considered as the best means to discover the city through the water. This independent sightseeing, gives a thrilling experience to both children and adults. The pedal boats that are available on rent are easy to control even for the children. It can fit four people, two in the front and two in the back. The boats can be taken from the four different moorings located in the heart of Amsterdam near the famous museums and entertainment places. They can be found at the Rijksmuseum, the Leidseplein, near the Anne Frank House and at the corner of Keizersgracht/Leidsestraat. The boats are available from April to October from 10.00 to 18.00 and till 21.30 during summer evenings.
Car
Amsterdammers who own a car, prefer to park it in the huge parking slot available in the city and enjoy the city with other forms of transport. Though very expensive, taxis are also available in plenty.
Car Parking: The City Council implemented a parking policy in the city with nominal parking fees. The city has around 100,000-metered parking spaces and 10 multi-storey car parks. The parking tickets are available at various places in the city. Day-parking tickets are available at hotels and weekly and monthly tickets can be obtained from the municipal payment offices. Paid parking takes place on the weekdays between 09:00 and 23:00. On Sundays it takes place in the inner city between 12:00 and 24:00. The city also imposes fine for illegal parking. Such cars parked in the illegal areas are clamped and towed away after 24 hours. A fine of EUR 136 is also charged from its owners.
Car Rental: Those who visit Amsterdam prefer to travel in rental cars as they can travel anywhere in the city according to their schedules. Avis and Hertz are the prominent car rental companies in Europe. They also offer special holiday rates and packages. Avis has branches in over 60 locations around Holland. These companies provide excellent service that attracts people.
