Educational Institutes:
The city boasts of a strong educational system with umpteen number of schools and colleges. It has a wide range of educational institutes ranging from primary schools to international ones. Amsterdam also has two universities with some 3500 lecturers and 37,000 students, 17 higher vocational institutions with some 29,000 students. Around 60 schools and school communities provide secondary education whereas over 200 primary schools and 50 schools for special needs functions in the city. The city schools provide education in various subjects including in the field of arts, architecture, film and television. Education is being offered in English, Dutch and other languages depending upon the area of studies. The city is also home to many tertiary education that provide vocational training. Bachelors and doctoral courses in Humanities (Linguistics, History, Philosophy, Religious Studies, Art), Film Studies, Sciences, Law, Economics, Dentistry, Medical Sciences and Social Sciences are also available in Amsterdam's institutes.

Institutes of Higher Learning: Many higher learning institutions including scientific and art schools are present in Amsterdam. University of Amsterdam, Academic Medical Centre (AMC) and medical research institute of the UvA, Free University (VU) established in 1880 by Dutch protestants, Center for Mathematics and Information Technology, International Institute for Social History which is one of the world's largest documentation and research institutes for social history, Royal Dutch Academy of Sciences (KNAW), a national institute for the sciences, Dutch Institute for Nuclear Physics and High Energy Physics that co-ordinates and support institute in the field of nuclear physics are the prominent higher educational institutes in the city. HES Amsterdam and Hogeschool INHOLLAND that offer higher vocational education and Gerrit Rietveldacademie, National Academy of Fine Art, Amsterdam College for the Arts that provides higher art education in fine arts, film and television, theatre, dance, music, architecture, museum studies and cultural management are also opted by the students for their advanced learning.

Research Institutes & Think Tanks: Various universities in Amsterdam include or support a number of research institutes for different and novel subjects. The Amsterdam Center for Language and Communication (ACLC), a research institute of the University of Amsterdam, which offers study in linguistics and focuses on functionally and formally oriented linguistic research, The Amsterdam School for Cultural Analysis that focuses on interdisciplinary study and analysis of contemporary culture, The Institute of Culture and History that offers disciplinary, interdisciplinary and collaborative research in European culture and history, Institute for Logic, Language and Computation (ILLC) that provides study of fundamental principles of encoding, transmission and comprehension of information, RESAM Research Institute in Economics & Econometrics University of Amsterdam which covers research concerning economics, econometrics, operations research and actuarial science and Cardiovascular Research Institute Amsterdam (CRIA) that gives diagnostics and treatment of patients with chronic cardiac disorders, are the prominent research institutes in Amsterdam.
