Paragliding , the popular pastime involving a joyous flight in a free-flying foot-launched aircraft called the paraglider , gives shape to man's eternal dream of flying like a bird. Initially a form of entertainment and recreation, Paragliding gradually took the form of an exciting adventure sport . The pilot of the paraglider sits in the harness which in turn is suspended below a fabric wing. This wing gets its shape from the pressure of the air that enters into it through the opening towards the front. The paraglider makes use of the hot column of air called Thermals in different areas like the mountains to soar up. The ridge lifts , which are air forced upwards by striking against a ridge, are used to create ridge soaring.
The main equipments needed for paragliding are the paraglider wing and the harness . Unlike the one in parasailing, the pilots of the paraglider can control the speed and the turns of the paraglider. The bucket seat of the harness also holds an extra parachute and a speed controller. After gaining altitude, the pilot can opt for cross-country flying too. There has also been a number of competitive flying of paragliders. These competitions are mainly formatted as cross-country leagues, comps, accuracy, acro and others.
It's not long that the sport of paragliding has been invented. Yet it has already been successful to attract a large number of the present generation adventure and thrill seeking youths. Paragliding is expected to be one of the main adventure sports of near future.
