Fell running is an adventure sport involving the participants who run and race each other off the road in the rugged and steep hilly terrains . The main challenges of this sport are in climbing the steep slopes of the rugged mountains. To take part in fell running, the participants are bound to be competent in mountain navigation . They should also be equipped with the instruments prescribed by the organizers. The Fell running races can be of a few types like the Ascent categories where the participants are given a formidable height of ascent within a short distance or the Distance Categories which makes the contestants run a long distance. The races are run by individuals or teams of two.
The sport is said to have originated from the English sport held on the fells in the Lake Districts of Northern Britain. But it is also believed that the first Fell Running was held in the hills of Scotland. It was also held in 1024, organized by King Malcolm Canmore, just before the Braemar Gathering.
Yearly four hundred to five hundred races are organized by the sports governing body, Fell Runners Association . A few other important organizations associated with the sport are Scottish Hill Runners, Welsh Fell Runners Association, Northern Ireland Mountain Running Association and Irish Mountain Running Association . These governing bodies are putting in extreme effort to make the sport a popular name among the thrill-loving youths.
