Climbing walls are generally constructed artificially, with which artificial holds for hands and feet are attached. The walls are made from various building materials like brick, concrete and wood. Often the walls are also made form multiplex boards. Holds are drilled into the climbing walls , which can be removed if necessary. The surface of the climbing walls is usually covered with colored concrete or polyurethane with sand dust. This is done to give the walls a natural look. The surface of the climbing walls are structured in such a way, that all the features of a natural rock surface can be found there. Plywood is also used as the material for climbing walls in many countries.

In the climbing walls , people generally use top rope climbing technique for ascending. However, low walls can also be climbed freely without any rope. While using top rope technique, climbers use various equipments like rope, helmet, harness, carabiners, slings or tapes and belaying device. As an adventure sport , climbing walls involve in certain risk factors. For this reason, the activity should be pursued under supervision of the trained and experienced people.
