Base jumping or BASE jumping is a sport event, in which people jump from an elevated place using a parachute. Base jumping is regarded to be one of the most dangerous adventure sports practiced by people all over the world. The word “base” is the short form of “ building , antenna , span , earth ”. These four words referred to different kinds of elevated places like buildings, towers, mast, bridges and cliff.
People, who like to feel the adrenalin rush and face challenges, prefer base jumping . They travel to the high places and jump from there, aided by parachutes . The sport base jumping is considered to evolve from skydiving , another adventure sport. In base jumping , people dive or jump from a much lower height compared to skydiving. The origin of base jumping can be traced back to the eighteenth century. In base jumping , during the initial phase of the jump, people fall freely. After covering a certain distance, they open their parachutes and glide to the ground.
The most essential equipment for base jumping is the parachute. Without parachute, people would crash into ground with great speed and face fatal injuries. Various competitions of base jumping are held in various countries by different organizations. Base jumping is considered one of the extreme adventure sports. Many base jumpers have lost their lives while performing the jump. As the sport involves in high risk factor, people without proper training and weak nerve should not try their hand in base jumping . As a precautionary measure, the parachutes used should be checked and rechecked before taking the leap.
