Hannibal Hamlin (1861-1865) was the Vice President of America during the Presidency of Abraham Lincoln. Hannibal Hamlin was a student at the District School and later joined his fathers farm. In the following years he switched jobs frequently which included, cook, surveyor, manager of a weekly newspaper in Paris,schoolmaster, woodcutter, and a compositor at a printer's office. After studying Law Hannibal Hamlin was admitted to the bar in the year 1833.
The Political career of Hannibal Hamlin began in the year 1836 with a term in the Maine House of Representatives. After being a part of the United States House of Representatives in 1840, Hannibal Hamlin left the State House in the year 1841. Later he once again served a couple of terms in the United States House of Representatives, from the year 1843-1847. A vacancy at the Senate in the year 1848 earned him a seat there and in the year 1851 the his election became for a full term.
Until the year 1856 Hannibal Hamlin was a Democrat but he broke away from the Party over the Kansas-Nebraska Act and joined the Republican Party. With the Republican nomination of Abraham Lincoln as a President Hannibal Hamlin seemed to be the best choice for the post of the Vise President.
As a Vise President, Hannibal Hamlin was not a particular favorite of Abraham Lincoln neither was he the principal advisor of the President. Hannibal Hamlin was in the Senate from the year 1869 to 1881 after which he retired from public life.
