New Hampshire Republican Primary - January 8, saw enthusiastic participation of the state precincts, recording a 95% attendance. There are in excess of 850,000 registered voters in New Hampshire, about 30% of who are Republicans. It was the third in the line of the nation-wide primaries after the Iowa and the Wyoming caucuses.
John McCain emerged as the projected winner from in the
New Hampshire Primary. He defeated his nearest contender Mitt Romney with a difference of 5% popular votes. The winner of the Iowa caucus, Mike Huckabee finished a distant third with 11% votes. Of the 12 Republican delegates, McCain secured seven delegate votes, while Romney secured 4 of them. It was a crucial win for John McCain after a poor show at the initial caucus at Iowa in order to seriously advance his candidacy for the Presidential post.
John McCain met a cheering crowd after his win, who greeted him with chants of 'Mac is Back'. McCain has attributed his success to his strong stance on the issue of national security. He has been a strong supporter of the Iraq war, and has also been a supporter of the reforms of the immigration laws. Both Romney and Huckabee congratulated McCain over his win.
