The Alaska Republican Primary - February 5 declared Mitt Romney to be the projected winner with 44% of the popular votes. He defeated his nearest rival Mike Huckabee, who finished with 22% of the popular votes. Romney secured the support of 12 pledged delegates out of the total of 26 delegates tied for the Super Tuesday Primary. Huckabee secured the vote of 6 delegates. Ron Paul and john McCain finished at the third and the fourth positions with 17% and 15% of the popular votes. Paul won 5 delegates, while McCain added to his tally with 3 delegates from the state.
The state of Alaska has a share of 3 electoral votes in the Electoral College. Almost 25% of the total 477,040 registered voters are Republicans in Alaska. Although it is one of the smaller states to contribute to the Electoral College in the US Presidential election, yet the result here will be an important shot in the arm for the chances of Republican hopeful Mitt Romney in the Republican National Convention.
