Maine Republican Presidential Caucuses-February 1

Maine Republican Presidential Caucuses - February 1

The Maine Republican Presidential Caucuses-February 1 continued well into Sunday, February 3 as heavy voter attendance was recorded at the various caucuses all across the state. Almost two-thirds of the total 413 municipal caucuses held their votes on Saturday, Feb. 2, while a few were left them for Sunday. Maine was the last caucus destination for the GOP before the Super Tuesday Primaries on February 5.

Mitt Romney emerged as the winner in the GOP Caucus at Maine, securing a little over half of the total number of votes. Romney got elected as the projected winner with 53% votes, well ahead of John McCain who came second with 22% votes. Ron Paul and Mike Huckabee finished at the third and fourth position with 19% and 5% votes respectively. Although the 21 delegates from Maine are non-binding, yet it can be assumed that the results of the popular votes will act as indicators in the Republican National Convention on May 3rd. It may also influence the voting pattern on February 5.

Mitt Romney was busy campaigning in Minnesota for the Feb. 5 primaries, when the results for the Maine Republican caucus were announced. As in Iowa, Romney attributed his victory to the demand among the American populace for a conservative change in Washington. After wins at Nevada and the Wyoming caucuses, as well as finishing first in the Michigan Primary, Romney will go into the Super Tuesday polls as a strong competitor for Republican hopeful John McCain, who fell short well short of Romney at Maine despite securing endorsement from two US Senators.
