Illinois Republic Primary - Feb 5 witnessed a fierce contest between Senator John McCain and senator
Mitt Romney. McCain clinched victory by securing 424,071 votes which forms 47% of the total votes cast while Romney obtained 256,805 votes which constitutes 29% of the total votes received. Other contestants like Mike Huckabee received 147,626 votes which forms 17% of the total votes and finished a close third in the race. Paul and Giuliani secured 45,166 and 11,341 votes respectively.
The total number of registered voters in the region is 7,427,886 along with 21 electoral votes. Among the total of the 70 delegates that the state has, 57 were tied to the primary on February 5, 10 were unpledged statewide delegates and 3 were members of the RNC. McCain won an overwhelming 54 delegate votes and Romney could manage only 2. The others did not register any delegate vote.
Republic Primary at Illinois on 5th February saw 99% of the precincts reporting. Among the total number of voters 57% were male, 43% were female. People from varied age groups voted for their favorite candidates. The majority of the votes were cast by people in the age group between 45 and 59.
McCain considerably increased his chances in the National Convention by securing the delegates in this extremely important and delegate rich state. He is now reportedly the front runner in the election race for the Republican Party.
