The
Nevada Caucus results featured a victory for Senator Hillary Clinton over her nearest rival
Barrack Obama. This was her second consecutive victory following a resounding comeback at the New Hampshire caucus, after an initial defeat at the Iowa Caucus.
The Nevada Caucus was held on Saturday, 19th January. Sen. Clinton finished with 51% of the popular votes, defeating her nearest contender Sen. Barrack Obama by a margin of over 5% votes. The
Nevada Caucus, however, had a fair amount of controversy surrounding it. Barrack Obama and his supporters accused Senator Clinton of intentional disenfranchisement. They stated that
Sen. Hillary blocked on-line polling through certain websites half an hour before the official closure of the polling time, an act that has adversely affected the voting pattern.
The Hillary Camp responded by accusing Obama and his supporters for adopting intimidation tactics to secure votes. This charge was however summarily denied by Obama’s legal aides.
Democrat
John Edwards, after a surprisingly commendable performance at the Iowa caucus slid to the third position at Nevada. However, he is expected to do well in the next primary in South Carolina on 26th January, because it happens to be his home-state. Till now, the focus is largely on the battle being fought out between Hillary Clinton and Barrack Obama.
For the Republican camp, the result of the Nevada Caucuses tilted heavily towards
Mitt Romney, who finished with 51% votes, defeating his nearest rival
Ron Paul by a wide margin. Ron Paul managed a meager 14% of the votes, marginally ahead of
John McCain with 13% votes.
