Mitt Romney quits the Presidential race as a candidate for the Republicans on Thursday, February 7. He took his decision after he finished well behind frontrunner John McCain in delegate counts after the Super Tuesday Primaries. Romney’s withdrawal has now almost resolved beyond doubt the nomination of Senator
John McCain as the Republican candidate for the Presidency.
Romney lost in the early Primaries at Iowa and New Hampshire, but recovered ground thereafter with wins at Nevada and Michigan. However, it is believed that quite a few issues went against Romney during his election campaign. First, he lost the confidence of the more conservative voters, because it was largely believed that he failed to take a firm stance on a number of key issues including illegal immigration and gay rights. Secondly, his Mormon affiliations also went against him in the nation-wide Primaries.
Declaring his intention to withdraw from the race, Romney said that it was not an easy decision for him to take at the end of the day. The monitory involvement has been huge, with as much as 35 million dollars being spent on the campaigns.
Mitt Romney declared that he withdrew his nomination to strengthen the Republican fight against the Democrats. He said he did not want to ‘forestall’ the Republican campaign against the Democrats. He stated there were areas of disagreements he had with Senator McCain, but stated that the differences against the Democrats were greater. He particularly attacked the Democrats on their Iraq policies. He condemned the way the Democrats expressed their wish to take the US armies out of Iraq.
