Like most other states in the US which held Democratic Primaries on Super Tuesday, the focus in Utah was on the duel between Sen. Barack Obama and Sen. Hillary Clinton. The results of the
Utah Democratic Primary- 5th February, however, went in favor of Barack Obama who defeated his closest rival Hillary Clinton with 57 % popular votes. Hillary secured 39% of the popular votes. Obama won a total of 70,373 popular votes while Hillary Clinton won 48,719 popular votes. Edwards is in the third position, with 3 % votes and a total of 3,525 votes.
The State of Utah witnessed a participation of 99 % from the precincts. There are total 1,696,168 registered voters in Utah, 7 % of which are registered Democrats. There are 23 Democrat delegates in the state of Utah and Obama secured 14 of them, while Hillary Clinton secured the other 9 delegate votes. 43 % of the total voters were male and 57 % were female. Majority of the voters belong to the age group between 30 to 44, and 45 to 59.
The win in Utah was another in the line of the small states won by Barack Obama. It is expected that the collective delegate strength that Obama manages to gather from these states with small delegate strengths will collectively prove to be significant in escalating his delegate count. Although Sen. Clinton has won a number of bigger states like California and New York, yet the Democrats following a system a proportionate representation, the fight seems to be far from over.
