March 12, 2008: The Democratic Primary at Mississippi - March 11 was won by Illinois Senator Barack Obama. He defeated his closest rival and fellow Democrat hopeful Sen. Hillary Clinton by a wide margin of over 20% votes. Obama received 60% of the popular votes, while Clinton finished with 38% votes. Mississippi has a total strength of 40 delegates, of which 33 tied to the March 11 Primary. Although the delegate distribution is yet to be finalized, yet Obama has secured the support of 17 delegates as of now. Clinton, on the other hand, has won the support of 11 delegates.
Women comprised the majority of the electoral strength, accounting to about 58% of the total voters. Most voters belonged to the category between 45 and 59 years of age. There were a considerable number of senior voters as well who actively participated in yesterday's Primary.
Obama, till now, has performed consistently well in all Southern states with a considerable African American population, and Mississippi was no exception. His win at the Mississippi Primary came on expected lines, and is at least partially attributed to his popularity among the African-American voters.
