Democratic Primary at Oregon - May 20

Illinois Senator Barack Obama has further strengthened his cause towards the nomination for US Presidency by winning the Democratic Primary at Oregon – May 20. He secured 59% of the popular votes, defeating Sen. Hillary Clinton by a margin of 18%. Obama, according to the latest reports, has secured the support of 29 out of the 52 pledged delegates tied for the May 20 Primary. Clinton has garnered the support of 19 delegates.

Almost 55% of the total voters of the Oregon Democratic Primary were women. The major section of the electoral strength (about 34%) belonged to an age group between 45 and 59. The win has helped Obama to balance out his loss at the Kentucky Primary held on the same day. Obama is clearly the favorite as the long drawn Democratic race now draws towards completion. However, Clinton has pledged on to fight till the National Convention in August.

Both candidates are now campaigning heavily for the Florida Primary. Florida, by the way, has no delegates to offer as the state failed to hold its Primary within the time stipulated by the Democratic Party.
