May 8, 2008: The crucial Democratic Primary at North Carolina – May 6 was won decisively by Illinois Senator Barack Obama. He defeated his nearest contender New Sen. Hillary Clinton with a margin of 14% votes. Obama received 56% of the popular votes, followed by Sen. Cliton with 42%. 1% of the total electoral strength chose to remain undecided. Obama also secured the support of 62 delegates on the basis of the proportionate representation followed in Democratic Primaries, while Clinton got the support of 46 pledged delegates. North Carolina has a total strength of 134 delegates, of which 115 were tied for the May 6 Primary.
The win for Obama was a significant one, coming after controversies that gathered momentum following his remarks about his ex-pastor and earlier comments on religion. It is also noteworthy, that 57% of total electoral strength for the North Carolina Primary were women. The results clearly show that Obama has considerably increased his support base among the women voters within the Democratic Party, who were one of the strongest supporters of Clinton till now. I The fact that most of the voters were between 45 to 59 years of age, and about 30% were above 60 also clearly show Obama's growing popularity among the senior citizens.
