May 8, 2008: The Democratic Primary at Indiana – May 6 was won by New York Senator Hillary Clinton by a narrow margin of 2% of the popular votes over Illinois Senator Barack Obama. Sen. Clinton secured 51% votes, followed by Sen. Obama at 49%. Clinton secured the support of 37 pledged delegates and Obama got the support of 33 delegates. North Carolina has a total strength of 134 delegates, with 115 of them tied for the May 6 Primary.
56% of the total electoral strength who appeared for the Indiana Democratic Primary were women. A majority 33% of the voters were between 45 and 59 years of age. Although the win was a welcome one for Sen. Clinton, who lost the North Carolina Primary held on the same day to Sen. Obama by a much wider margin, yet the lead was much lower than expected by her supporters.
Addressing her supporters soon after the declaration of the results, Clinton said that she would continue to challenge Obama on the route to the Democratic nomination. She asked her supporters to continue their trust and support towards her and her campaign.
