The Democratic Primary for Alaska - February 5 was won by Senator Barack Obama. It was a sweeping win for the Illinois Senator who secured 75% of the total popular votes from the state. Sen. Hillary Clinton secured 25% of the votes. Obama won the support of 9 delegates of the total of 13 delegates, whereas Clinton bagged up the remaining four. The entire strength of the popular votes and the delegates were divided by the two major frontrunners from the Presidential posts from within the Democratic Party, leaving nothing in the way of Sen. John Edwards, who has anyway already declared his withdrawal from the nomination race prior to the Super Tuesday showdown.
Alaska has a total of above 477,000 voters, 14% of which are registered Democrats. Of the total 18 delegates from the state, 5 are superdelegates. The win at Alaska was another in the series of the small states wins by Sen. Obama. It is expected that the delegates won by Obama from the smaller states will contribute significantly to counter the delegates won by Sen. Clinton in the bigger states.
