After a strong and close contest between Sen.
Barack Obama and Sen.
Hillary Clinton in the
Alabama Democratic Primary - February 5, Obama emerged victorious on Super Tuesday, securing a total of 56% votes. Clinton secured 42% votes while
Sen. John Edwards finished third, way behind the other two democratic leaders.
Alabama has 2,723,232 total registered voters and holds 9 electoral votes to the Presidential elections. There was an outpour of voters with almost all state precincts participating in the elections. A high percentage of female voters participated in the elections, lending their support to the woman representative, Clinton. As compared to the 60% of the woman voters, only 40% of male voters turned up for the elections in Alabama - February 5. The exit poll reports show high participation of the senior citizens as well.
A high percentage of black votes accounted for the clear win of Obama in the February 5 Democratic Alabama Primaries. High expenditure in pre-election campaigning by the senator in Alabama is also considered as one of the driving factors for his win in the southern state. Along with Alabama, Sen. Mike Obama secured a win in Alaska, Colorado, Connecticut and Illinois on Super Tuesday.
