The current system of choosing electors by short ballot has its own merits and demerits. Another demerit of the current method of choosing electors is that it requires lot of money and time. Henceforth, the necessity of Alternative method of choosing Electors has evolved. The Alternative method of choosing Electors has been tried few times in the history of US Politics. Few of these alternative methods include - Interstate compact, Appointment by State Legislature, Electoral Districts, Maine Method, New York, 1828.
The US states have a major role to play in these alternative methods of choosing electors. But rarely it has been found that all the US states have agreed to start a new method. Like, the Interstate Compact was adopted only by Maryland. In the system of Electoral Districts, one US state is supposed to be divided into a number of electoral districts. The voters cast their precious votes to elect one elector from their district.
Few of these alternative methods of choosing electors have been used in US in as early as 18th century. For example, Appointment by State Legislature was practiced in US between 1792 to 1800.
