One of the oldest churches of the city, the inception of
St. Peter Church, Zurich dates back to 13th century. Also known as St. Peterskirche of Zurich, the imposing church lies in the Lindenhof area of the city.
The highlight of the St. Peterskirche in Zurich is its enormous clock, the largest church clock in Europe. With a diameter of almost 9 meters, the clock of St. Peter Church attracts and astonishes the tourists and visitors. It is not only a mammoth sized clock but it possesses intricate Baroque and Roman styled designs in its interiors.
The old church was renovated in the beginning of 18th century. During this period, the church and its priest - Johan Kaspar Lavatar became very popular among the masses. Lavatar's preaching were so popular that people used to reserve sits for the Sunday masses to attend his preaching sessions. The church fascinates with its old and well carved murals.
The choir of the church has very strong influence of Roman architecture while Baroque architectural style is evident on the nave with three gateways. The Hebrew inscriptions above the pulpit of the church are another striking feature of St. Peter Church.
The St. Peter Church is open from 8 AM to 6 PM from Monday to Friday. On Saturdays, people can visit the church anytime between 9 AM and 4 PM. On Sundays special worship session is held at 10 in the morning.
