One of the finest among the Vienna attractions, Belvedere presents a classic example of the famous Viennese architectural style. Standing imposingly, the twin palaces of Belvedere were built during 18th century under the patronage of Prince Eugene of Savoy. Famous architect of Baroque style, J.L. Von Hilderbrandt, designed the magnificent structures.
Located amidst a beautiful park, Belvedere houses several famous Austrian paintings. The lower palace is locally called the "Osterreichisches Barockmuseum" or Austrian Museum of Baroque Art. Numerous well known Austrian art works of 18th century are put on display in this palace. The upper palace displays a collection of paintings belonging to the 19th and 20th century. Works of artist of the Secession movement, such as Egon Schiele, Oscar Kokoschka and Gustav Klimt, are featured here.
The enchanting alpine garden was built in the park area of the Vienna Belvedere castle in 1803. Over 4,000 different plants highlight the rich flora of the country. The best time to visit is spring and early summer. This is the time when most of the plants foliate and start to bloom. With its architectural, natural and historical importance, Belvedere in Vienna is popular among all kinds of tourists.
Both the Upper Belvedere and Lower Belvedere are open daily from 10 AM to 6 PM. On Wednesdays the Lower Belvedere is open till 9 PM in the evening.
