Sweden vs Spain 14th June

Spain Celebrates as it steps into Euro 2008 Quarter Finals

Innsbruck June 14- A goal from David Villa just two minutes before the end of the game has put Spain on top of Group D and has ensured the presence of the team in the Euro Cup 2008 quarter finals.

Right from the beginning, Spain emerged as potential champions. Sweden played well, but the Spanish team threw their defense in jeopardy. Within 15 minutes into the Sweden-Spain match, Villa made a short corner to David Silva who passed the ball to Torres who opened the scoring for Spain. The Swedish team took no time in reacting. Johan Elmander struck first waring Spain. The next shot came from Ibrahimovic who equalized the score with a sure footed goal.

In the second half, Sweden failed to pick up pace. Then, it was Spain that threatened to get the lead. Villa and Silva made passes to each other and Sweden's Isaksson had a tough time dealing with both and also got a nasty b;low on his face. But he managed to deny both the players. With Isaksson injured, Daniel Andersson blocked a left footed shot made by Torres towards the net.

Sweden could have won if Peter Hansson's free kick had hit the net. Instead, it was Villa who struck just two minutes before the game ended. Spain's 4-1 victory against Russia had placed the team on an advantageous position in the Euro 2008 championship.
