Vienna, June 29- Spain, after 24 years, has been able to conquer Europe with the title of Euro 2008 champions. They defeated Germany 1-0 in the tournament final that took place in Vienna yesterday. Germany had performed well throughout the tournament, but they could not match up to Spain's skills when it came to winning the final match of UEFA Euro 2008.
Germany-Spain match began with Germany in control of the game. They had more ball possession and proved the stronger of the two teams in the opening exchanges. Spain looked tensed while, Germany oozed confidence. However, Joachim Löw's men missed opportunities to score. Miroslav Klose and Thomas Hitzlsperger got a glimpse of goal, but failed to strike.
It was after 20 minutes into the game that Spain sprung into action. Germany goalkeeper Jens Lehmann had to make an save from his own team member Christoph Metzelder who had shot the ball towards his own net. Fernando Torres attacked with a header directed towards goal but, it bounced back after hitting the post. However, Spain did score.
The goal from Spain came in the 33rd minute. The source was Xavi, who made an excellent pass to Torres. Directing the ball towards goal, Torres ran past Phillip Lahm and shot the ball over Lehmann into the net. Spain threatened to increase their score when David Silva got the opportunity to send home a cross by Iniesta. But, the Spaniards failed to double their advantage though they got many scoring opportunities.
Though one goal was enough to give Spain to the winning glory, the team couldn't secure its score with a second goal. Spain had made seven shots on goal in the last 20 minutes of the Euro 2008 final whereas Germany could make just one shot. In the end, it was Spain who proved themselves winners on the grounds of Ernst Happel stadium.
