Vienna, June 13- A penalty by Ivica Vastic gave Austria a narrow draw against Poland in the second Euro 2008 Group B game. The Austria-Poland match June 13 ended in a draw, each team scoring one point. Poland got a score in the first half and it seemed that the team would win against the Euro 2008 co-hosts. But a last minute goal from Vastic saved Austria from losing its second Euro Cup 2008 match.
The focus was on Austria which had lost to Croatia in the Group B opening match. Austria made successive attacks but Poland's Artur Boruc showed some impressive goalkeeping by providing his team with three saves. Two of his saves were from Martin Harnik and the third from Umit Korkmaz. Later, Boruc denied Christoph Leitgeb.
Austria played confidently and kept their defense firm. Their powerful attacks showed that they might score. But it was Poland that opened the scoring with a goal from Roger Guerreiro half an hour into the game. Smolarek had kicked from left to right and then Saganowski deflected it towards Guerreiro who lost no time in scoring. Poland picked up pace with this goal.
The efforts made by the Austrians were speculative and without results. Though the Austrians had dominated the field during much of the first half after Poland had scored, they had a tough time in the second half as Poland went to the field with intentions of fierce attacks. Smolarek tried to double Poland's score only to be stopped by Austrian goalkeeper Jürgen Macho. The next attacks were from Dudka and Krzynowek and Macho did a good job preventing Poland from doubling their score.
As the Austria-Poland match drew towards its end, the Austrians equalized after Prodl won a penalty and Vastic brought the match into a draw.
