Previous Euro Cups

Previous Euro Cups date back to the time when these were known as the European Nations Cup. This tournament, involving the nations of Europe, was started in the year 1960. Since then the Euro Cup is held once in every four years. The tournament came to be known as UEFA European Football Championship or the Euro Cup since 1968.

The countries, which have hosted the Previous Euro Cups, include Italy, Sweden, Spain, Germany, France and Yugoslavia. Belgium and Netherlands became the first to host the tournament together. The tournament has been won a maximum three times by Germany, while France has followed suit with two championship triumphs. Other countries which have won the Euro Cup are The Netherlands, Greece, Russia or erstwhile USSR, Italy, Denmark, Spain and the Czech Republic. Germany also holds the record of maximum appearances at the Euro Cup, which stands at 10.

The earlier Euro Cups brought a number of talented players to the limelight. Michel Platini of France with nine goals to his name is the highest scorer in all the editions of the tournament taken together. Alan Shearer of England and Patrick Kluivert of The Netherlands follow him with seven and six goals respectively. The 13th edition of the Euro Cup will be jointly hosted by Austria and Switzerland in 2008.
