Greece defeated host Portugal in the final to become a surprise

Greece started the Euro Cup 2004 finals with a surprise victory over Portugal in the inaugural match of the tournament. In the initial rounds, they registered one win, one draw, and one loss, and advanced to the knock out stages, sending Spain out of the tournament on goal difference.
Banking upon their excellent defensive skills, the Greeks sailed smoothly through the knock out stages of Euro Cup 2004. They defeated France by a goal in the quarter finals to advance to the semi finals. There, they faced Czech Republic, whom they defeated by an injury time goal in the second half of extra time.
