Denmark became the surprise
Euro Cup 1992 winner when they defeated ruling world champion Germany in the final on the 26th of June at the Ullevi Stadium in Gothenburg of Sweden. It was the first European title for Denmark.
Denmark played the European qualifiers, but were runners in their group. As only the group winners advance to the finals, they were out of the tournament. However, when their group leaders Yugoslavia backed away due to the Yugoslav wars, Denmark found a place in the Euro 1992 finals. They made full use of their good luck with equally stunning display of soccer at the competition and eventually emerged as the champions in the tournament.
In the first round of the Euro Cup 1992, Sweden topped the group and Denmark became second. As a result, France and England went out of the tournament. Denmark faced tough competition from Netherlands, one of the contenders for the title, in the semi finals. The Denmark national football team edged past their opponents via tie breaker. They advanced to the final of the tournament to face Germany.
In the final of the Euro Cup 1992, Denmark brought about the biggest upset of the tournament. They defeated Germany, winners of the 1990 FIFA World Cup, by two goals to nil to become
Euro Cup 1992 winner and European Champions for the first time. Danish striker Henrik Larsen emerged as the joint top scorer with three goals to his name.
