Euro Cup 1992 was the ninth edition of this football competition between the European nations. The tournament was held in Sweden. It started on 10th June making it to the finals on 26th June.
The stage was set on 2nd of February, 1990, wherefrom the qualifiers for the Euro Cup 1992 were selected. These qualifiers consisted of 34 nations across Europe. However, the number of teams was reduced to 33 as East Germany joined Germany to form a single country. Some of the countries, which participated in the qualifiers, are Romania, Scotland, Denmark, USSR, Germany, Faroe Islands, Turkey, France, Iceland and others.
The final rounds of the
Euro Cup 1992 had eight teams participating in it. These included the following:
- Sweden
- Netherlands
- France
- Scotland
- Germany
- Denmark
- CIS
- England
Among these teams, Sweden qualified for being the host nation and Denmark replaced Yugoslavia, who had withdrawn due to the Yugoslav Wars. Just prior to the break up of USSR, the former Soviet States participated as the CIS.
The matches of Euro Cup 1992 in Sweden were played at the following venues:
- Idrottsparken in Norrkoping
- Nya Ullevi of Goteborg
- Malmo Stadion in Malmo and
- Rasundastadion in Solna.
Group A consisted of Sweden, France, Denmark and England. The tournament started on 10th of June with the match between France and Sweden at Solna. Sweden emerged as the winner and Denmark as the runner-up in their group league. Group B consisted of Netherlands, Scotland, Germany and CIS. Netherlands and Germany made it to the knock out stage from their group league. The first semi-final took place between Sweden and Germany on 21st June whereby Germany won the match by 3-2. The second semi-final that took place between Netherlands and Denmark on 22nd June got Denmark as the winner. Thus Germany and Denmark made their way to the finals of Euro Cup 1992.
Germany, the reigning world champions were stunned in the final match on 26th June at Gothenburg. Denmark defeated Germany by 2-0 and won the cup for the first time.
Henrik Larsen of Denmark, Dennis Bergkamp of Netherlands, Tomas Brolin of Sweden and Karlheinze Riedle of Germany emerged top scorers with three goals each. 32 goals were scored in 15 matches of Euro 1992, producing an average of 2.13 goals per match. The fastest goal was scored by Frank Rijkaard in the game between Netherlands and Germany on 18th June.
