The fourth edition of the
Euro Cup 1972 was held in Belgium. The tournament kicked off on 14th June of that year and ended on 18th June. The format of the European championships was then different with only 4 teams participating in the final stage. That means there were only the semi finals the third place match and the final.
The finals were held at different venues in Belgium like Stade Emile Verse and Heysel Stadium in the capital - Brussels, Bosuil Stadium in Antwerp and Sclessin Stadium of Liege.
Four participating teams at the 1972 European Nations Cup were the hosts Belgium, West Germany, USSR and Hungary. West Germany emerged as the eventual winner after beating USSR 3-0 in the final match. The host country came third defeating Hungary by two goals to one. One of the famous strikers of all time – Gerd Muller of Germany became the highest scorer of the tournament with four goals. The tournament produced an average of 2.5 goals per match.
