Viktor Ponedelnik, Drazan Jerkovic, Francois Heutte, Milan Galic and Valentin Ivanov emerged as the
Top Scorers of the Euro Cup 1960. It placed themselves in the record books of the UEFA European Football Championship. The tournament was a high scoring one, producing an average of 4.25 goals per game. The Euro 1960 tournament stands apart with the fact that, including those of the qualifying round, no match ended in a goalless draw.
All the Euro Cup 1960 Top Scorers scored two goals each in the tournament. Both the goals of Francois Heutte for France came in their semi final match against Yugoslavia. However, France had to lose the match 4-5 to Yugoslavia, who were helped by a brace by Drazan Jerkovic. Milan Galic scored the first goal for Yugoslavia in this match in the 11th minute, which was also the fastest goal of the tournament. His other goal came in the final.
Viktor Ponedelnik scored a goal in the semi finals against Czechoslovakia, before scoring an extra time winner in the final against Yugoslavia to make USSR the first Euro Cup champions. Valentin Ivanov, the other top scorer from USSR, found the net once against Hungary and then, once again in his country’s semi final match against Czechoslovakia. All these players have been able to carve a niche for themselves among the famous players to have ever participated in the history of the Euro Cup.
