Euro Cup 1960 was the first competition of this football tournament involving the nations of Europe. At that time, the competition was known as the European Nations Cup and involved only 17 teams. The tournament was held from the 6th to 10th July in the year 1960. The preliminary rounds, however, had started much earlier.
Euro Cup 1960 was hosted by France. Matches were played in different cities of France, like Paris and Marseille. The countries who took part in the inaugural European Nations Cup 1960 were France, Romania, Austria, Bulgaria, USSR, Portugal, Norway, Yugoslavia, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Turkey, Spain, Republic of Ireland, East Germany, Poland, Denmark and Greece. However, some of the major nations of European soccer, like Italy, West Germany, England and others were absent from the competition.
The Euro 1960 in France proved to be a major stage for a number of talented players to prove their mettle. Drazan Jerkovic and Milan Galic of Yugoslavia, Francois Huette of France and Viktor Ponedelnik and Valentin Ivanov of the USSR emerged as joint top scorers with two goals each.
