Worthersee

Worthersee is an alpine lake in Carinthia, which is a southern Austrian province. The length of the lake is about 20 kilometer and it is 1-2 kilometer in width. It runs from Klagenfurt in the east to Velden in the west.

Worthersee runs along the base of the steep alpine foothills covered with dense forests from north to south. Beyond the hills and forests, the peaks of the snow capped alpine mountains are visible. The color of the lake’s water is a distinctive blue-green and the water is transparent.

With the construction of the Austrian Southern Railway (Südbahn), around the middle of the nineteenth century, Wörthersee Lake turned into an exhilarating summer retreat. Both the motorway and the railway tracks run along the narrow space between the steep hills and the shore. The important towns along the route are Krumpendorf, Velden and Portschach.

The Worthersee Lake region is covered by snow during the winters. At an approximate interval of every 10 years, the Worthersee Lake completely freezes, thereby attracting numerous ice skaters.

The Worthersee Lake region has been termed as Austria's Monte Carlo. July and August is the ideal time to visit this place, when water temperatures reach 25°C. This is a major Klagenfurt tourist attraction.
