Greece Euro: Defending champion
Greece has been placed in Euro 2008 Group 'D' at the final rounds of the competition. They will start the tournament in the same group which has Sweden, Spain and Russia. The team is expected to display effective football, as they did on the last occasion. This is the second consecutive year after 2004, when Greece will be playing the same group in the first round with Spain and Russia. Some of their notable players are Angelos Charisteas, Georgios Samaras and others.
Being the defending European champions, Greece was selected in the top pot. They played in
UEFA Euro 2008 qualifiers in Group C. Greece acquired 31 points in 12 matches to emerge as the group champions and advance to the Euro 2008 finals. Other than losing against Turkey, the Greek national football team won all their home matches. They drew against Norway at Oslo, but won the rest of their away matches.
Greece Euro will be playing all their matches of the group stage of Euro 2008 at the Wals Siezenheim Stadium at Salzburg. They will start defending their Euro title by playing there first match against Sweden on 10th June. Their second match will be against Russia on 14th June.
Greece Euro will take the pitch for the last match of their group stages at the same venue against Spain on the 18th of June. With the title of the European Champions under their belt, the Greek players will be playing to fulfill high expectations of their supporters.
