Parc des Bastions is a park at the center of city of Geneva which was built in the year 1817. It was built in order to provide the citizens of Geneva some space to stroll around. This is the first ever strolling ground in Geneva. Formerly it was a garden surrounded by trees, springs and memorials. It is very refreshing to take a walk along its shadowy alleys. The place is surrounded by 50 different types of trees encroaching upon the roads. As the name suggests the park is surrounded by bastions.
Origin of the Park
The park initially covered an area of 10,000 square meters. The area expanded with the filling up of the ditches around the park. Presently the area of the park is 64,968 square meters.
The park contains a giant chess board which is worth a watch. Visitors could also play chess on the board. There is a restaurant right next to the chess board. A portion of the park is dedicated to the reformists of Europe. The reformers' wall is the structure dedicated to the reformists portraying the primary events as well as the protagonists of the movement. The University building is located just opposite to the reformer wall. Besides these, the park also contains the ruins of a botanical garden which gives it a historical dimension.
The park, which was formerly a garden, attracts lots of tourists where they could enjoy serenity.
