Spalentor is located to the west of Basel's University. It is a fortified gate, which was a part of the boundary wall of the old town of Basel. Spalentor of Basel is the finishing point of this town. It was constructed in the year of 1370. However, in order to expand the city in the 19th century, the people of Basel brought down the walls and thus the gates are only remaining. Till date Spalentor is one of the major Basel Attractions, which fascinates the tourists coming from far and wide.
Colorful glass tiles and comic figures of 15th century had been used to beautify the gate. People cherish the beauty of the oak portcullis present at the gate. Spalentor in Basel houses the memoir of city's customs belonging to 1795, which is of great historical significance. On the left of the gate, an old letterbox with the name of M. Berri (1801 - 1854) is still found. There is an emblem of the Basel pigeon on the letterbox.
