Kunsthalle Basel

Kunsthalle Basel is a leading institution of contemporary art. It was established in 1872. Kunsthalle Basel encourages discussions, holds seminars and arranges lectures and presentations regarding issues of contemporary art. In the art works, lectures and discussions that are held in the institution a lot of emphasis is put on topical issues. This creation of this museum was initiated by Basel Art Association in order to render support to contemporary art.

History of the Art Museum

The idea of an art museum first dawned on Johann Jakob in 1840. He started a ferry service across Rhine and the money was contributed towards the construction of an art house. Johann Jakob was the architect of the museum. The design of the building was inspired partly from the Municipal Theater and partly from the City Casino.

Mission of the Museum

The museum was established with a view to promote art as well as a harmonious relationship between the artists and the connoisseurs of art. The museum encourages young artists to show their talent in the field of art.

Segments of the Museum

The building is divided into different portions to accommodate various activities inside the museum. The Steinberg building serves a dual purpose of a cafeteria and a hall for permanent art exhibitions. It also houses conference rooms and libraries. The first floor of the museum is allotted for the contemporary art exhibitions. It is a beautiful and a spacious hall with a high ceiling.

The museum stands as a realization of a dream of artists like Carl Brunner, Charles Igguel and Arnold Bocklin. The museum has been expanded for various purposes. The extension of the museum ended with the construction of a sculpture hall in 1927. The maintenance of the museum was taking a toll on the financial position of the museum. However, it was redeemed from such a situation when a bank bought the museum and renovated it from 1969 to 1973.

Exhibitions Held in the Museum

A lot of exhibitions are held in the museum to showcase the artistic talents of people. National and international art exhibitions are held at the museum. Technically the demonstration rooms have become more sound which helps in giving presentations of films and videos. A recent exhibition is going on at the museum of artists like Mia Bailey, Thomas Isler and others.
